Make it Even

Are you making an exclusive product or do you want to reach many people at a low price? What materials can you use and are they available or very expensive? Can you have a design repaired or do you have to replace it immediately?

Topical dilemmas that the creators of Museum Speelklok's unique collection pieces also faced centuries ago! The exhibition Make it Even. Music Machines & Sustainable Design provides insight into the choices the inventors of our historic music machines made back then and what designers of today are facing. Is the key to a sustainable future to be found in the past?

Solutions in design

Designers Jelle Mastenbroek, Jesse Howard and Christien Meindertsma enter into dialogue with the historic museum collection with their work in Make 't Even. Among other things, Jelle Mastenbroek's work includes the Porcelain Piano, an antique-looking cabinet with a piano full of porcelain plates that can make music. He drew inspiration for this from instruments you also see in Museum Speelklok. Jesse Howard designs everyday appliances such as a blender and vacuum cleaner in such a way that users can make and repair them themselves in no time. Parts of Christien Meindertsma's research into different treatments and applications of sheep's wool are shown; they have more to do with musical instruments than you might think!
